Food, kebab and New York

>> Wednesday, December 5, 2012

I hardly mention  about food in my travel  blog,  but today is  exception. Being a student at that time,  I could not afford to spend money eating at restaurant   I have to say I had  mostly  kebab and fillet burger  from Mc Donald and sometimes the famous instant food noodles,  maggie mee on my menu when I was  travelling. Basically you can find these food in any city in the world and they are cheap.

Nevertheless I do have some interesting story to tell about my encounter with food. In New York, I ate mostly kebab from lunch to dinner which I bought  from  food stall stands  in  the streets  of New  York.  One of famous sight of New York apart from yellow cabs. You can find food stall stands at every corner of  New York streets selling hot dogs, kebab, burgers,  falafels, gyros, drinks etc. In New York,  food from the east contributed by the immigrants  have been integrated to the menu of the city. This is one of the wonderful things about  New York.

I went to a restaurant and had a pizza and espresso in Rome . I have to say Italians   do make the best  pizza.  In New York, I had tom yam at a  Thai Restaurant and the chef is from Malaysia. I still remember the creamy coconut taste of  tom yam  in my mouth  that is  different from the tom yam that I usually have in Malaysia. I often eat  at  Thai restaurants in Malaysia as Thai food  is one of my favourites . I  have to say and this is just  my personal opinion, Thai food is the best food in the world and no wonder you can easily find Thai food from all corners of the world.

I became hooked to coffee after  my trip to Paris and US and I  still am until now. I tried to buy  Folgers coffee  in sachets online, but the shipping  delivery  cost is twice  the price of  the coffee itself. Now I satisfy myself with grind coffee from Starbucks and make myself a cup of coffee everyday. My day will not be complete without coffee. There is nothing better than having a teh tarik in the morning and a coffee in the afternoon and it is  my  routine . There was research finding  that said drinking 1-2 cups a days keep your heart healthy, so I have good excuse to drink my coffee everyday. With the mix of right coffee creamer makes such a good taste of coffee. It is hard to find good coffee creamer in Malaysia, I am talking about the liquid coffee creamer such as ' half and half ' not the powdered coffee  creamer   because the coffee does not taste good with powdered creamer. I also do not like flavored coffee creamer like cinnamon taste, blubbery etc. I like real taste of coffee.  I had a chance to taste Mexican food during my visit to USA like tortilla  with  hot sauce and chille.

p/s Just want to share with you  interesting .story about Scientology.
How did Scientology get started?  L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer. Hubbard. an atheist, was mocking on religion and said  "I could come up with a fake religion, and people would flock to it!" Couple years later, he came up with the  religion.

Central Market, Kuala Lumpur

>> Sunday, September 23, 2012

It has been a while since my last post. Sorry,  I went on hiatus, 5 months to be exact  and now I am back again. I am not promising to be more active   and I like to do things at my own pace. I hope I still have readers out there. It seems  once in a full moon I got this mood to start writing again. It is probably because the  photos that I want to share were just taken yesterday. I sometimes  feel lazy to dig old photos, scan  and publish them in my blog.

I went to Kuala Lumpur yesterday to meet a friend and I took  my compact 35mm Kodak digital camera 7 mega pixels, with me . I bought this camera 7 years ago at KMart, yes,  in USA. It is small and I just slipped inside my pocket and on the way walking down the streets  to meet my friend at a restaurant nearby Central Market, I just snapped some pictures. Now,  with the advanced  of technology, you can take good photos even with hand phone with camera but I have to satisfy my self with what I have and what is convenient at the time. I wish I had Samsung Galaxy handphone with me.

Central Market is one of main attractions in Kuala Lumpur
Central Market was originally a wet market. Now it is shopping
bazaar for local products  such as handicrafts, arts, batik, songket etc.
A must place to visit for tourists.

'Rome wasn't built in a day''

>> Thursday, May 31, 2012

It is me again after 5 months of silence.  My last year's resolution to keep  updating my blog with more posts seemed hard to keep. I have been neglecting my blog and I do not have really good excuse for that.Lot of things have happened  and  passing of Whitney Houston probably one of biggest  in world news early this year.  It was finally  revealed by coroner  that  cause of the death was because she had a heart attack that led her to lose consciousness and drown in the bath at her hotel. Immediately after the death, it was widely thought that drinking  combined with prescription pills made  the star lose consciousness and slip under the bathwater. However  traces of prescription pills like xanax was found in her blood system but they did not contribute to her death. Chronic usage of cocaine by her was the main factor leading to the heart attack.

I am not her fan though I am familiar with her hit songs. Most Malaysians probably never heard of or not familiar with  anti-depressant  prescription drugs like paxil. zoloft, xanax and prozac but I do. Just For the record, I never take any of  these prescription drug and never pop any of them.  My friend took  xanax . He was on paxil before that . He lives in the USA.  These drugs help to relieve symptoms like panic attack, anxiety  or depressions or sleeping  disorder. However there is significant side effects of the drugs and you will go through  withdrawal symptoms when you want to get it off. You may get  hooked to  these drug  too and become additive to them .  My friend said that many Americans  got  hooked to prescriptions drugs because live  is stressful there. I doubted that.   I guess when dealing with depression, anxiety,  difficulty  or stress probably the best way  as a Muslim myself  is by reading the  Quran or  meditation and prayers. I wish  to live in free stress world or country . I read on Yahoo about people living in zero currency. They  do not have debts at all and living in simplest way possible. Debt is one of biggest sources  of stress and by eliminating them you  could have  unstressful  life. This will be my new resolution  next year.

Talking about news again, on the local scene  was Bersih 3.0 rally that took place   last month in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The so called peacefully rally for  clean and fair elections turned  into violence and destructive and not 'Bersih' anymore.  Alhamdulillah most Malaysians and the silent majority hate violence and love peaceful Malaysia. If you do not like the current government, throw them  through the ballot box but not through street demonstrations . Rome wasn't built in a day and  Malaysia too. I hope no more drama of this kind  in the future,  In sya Allah. May God  forbids.  Looking at the facial gesture of  the protesters on the streets of the rally   they were different   from those in Palestine,  Afghanistan and Iraq. People always  forget to be thankful and grateful  to God.

Here are some interesting pictures of Rome. I almost forget what travel blog is all about.

Fireworks and Happy New Year 2012

>> Tuesday, January 3, 2012

When the clock ticked 12.00 am, I was ready with a camera to capture picture of firewooks celebrating New Year 2012 at my relative apartment which overlooking spectacular view of Shah Alam. To my disappointment there was no big fireworks from Dataran Shah Alam this year, except for  some small fireworks coming  from individual residential houses.  I could  see fireworks as far as from  KLCC There was probably big fireworks being displayed at ICT Shah Alam, but I could not see them from the apartment.

I have to remind myself, everyday and every minute death is getting closer and it could be today, tomorrow or next year .  Things that  happened in the past whether   last year or yesterday or just now were things  that  you cannot  grasp anymore and you cannot change them. They are things   you leave behind  and you move on  but death is getting closer to you every minute.

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given (full) compensation on the Day of Resurection. So he is drawn away from the Fire an admitted to Paradise has attained (his desire) And what is the life of this world except the delusion.( Al Quran, Surat Al-Imran :185)

Say "Death, from which you are fleeing, will certainly catch up with you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the Unseen and the Visible and He will inform you about what you did"
(Al-Quran, Surat Al-Jumu'a:8)

To everybody out there, Happy New Year and may your wishes come true.
